…and to our home, Maison Lahon, just north of the Pyrenees mountains and the medieval city of Pau.
We have lived here for ten years and rent out our converted barn for family holidays and offer bed and breakfast in the house. We also organise creative painting courses in the spring and autumn with guest tutors from the UK. To keep us busy, Sandy makes fabric items such as aprons and bottle bags – www.sandyssewings.com – and Neil is an artist, illustrator, graphic designer and photographer – www.idea1.eu.
Holidays are available in the large, converted 4/5 bedroomed barn with an open plan living/dining/ kitchen areas. On the first floor are four bedrooms each with their own bathrooms and a mezzanine area. the fifth bedroom is in the adjoining pool house. Outside are 5 acres of garden and land with lots of trees and includes a 10m by 5m swimming pool. There is a pelota wall and a boule area with views to the Pyrenees mountains and plenty of land for football and cricket. There is a games room with a ping pong table. We are child friendly and we have lots of equipment and toys.
Mouhous is a very small hamlet but has it’s own Mairie. The nearest town is Garlin (15 minute drive) which has a supermarket, bank, post office, boulangerie and a couple of bars and a small restaurant. The area around our home is a gently undulating landscape of farms, forests and vineyards dotted with small towns and villages to explore virtually unchanged since D’Artagnan strutted across his homeland. Like many areas of France, however, it is defined by its food and drink – duck is king along with many local cheeses and the excellent red wines from Madiran and tasty whites from Jurancon.
Pau, a city full of Renaissance splendour and medieval charm, is 20kms away to the south. It is known as the English city where the first European golf course was established. The Boulevard des Pyrenees provides many bars where you can relax and view the mountains through the palm trees. It is the centre for the arts in the region with galleries, live music and celebrations throughout the year.
There are many places to visit from the mountains and the Pyrenees national Park – paragliding, caving, walking, white water rafting and skiing – 30kms to the south and and hour and a half to the Atlantic coast – fabulous beaches, surfing – as is Bordeaux. Toulouse is about 2 hours drive.
So at Lahon you can be as energetic or as lazy as you like.
